The invasive pests, hemlock woolly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale are increasing their range in the Northeast, stressing this keystone species. Forest health specialists with Vermont’s Departments of Forests, Parks and Recreation Jim Esden and Savannah Ferreira will provide a brief history of each pest, their life history, mode of damage, delineation, and control efforts in Vermont. They will also cover the ecological importance of hemlock, predisposing factors for hemlock decline, current HWA population surveys in Vermont, and the projected distribution of HWA in a warming climate in the Northeast.
