Forest Birds & Woodland Stewardship Tour

Come see what more than 60 years of active forest stewardship can create: exceptional bird habitat, a diverse and productive working forest, and a contiguous block of more than 4,000 acres of conserved woodland in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
Join Vermont Woodlands Association and Audubon Vermont for a woods walk at Black Hills Timber, LLC, a remarkable 1,927-acre Tree Farm in Greensboro and Glover. Hosted by property owner and consulting forester Rich “Carbo” Carbonetti, this tour will explore how long-term forest management can support healthy, productive forests while also creating diverse habitat for birds and wildlife.
As we walk through mature northern hardwoods, mixed woods, spruce-fir stands, and cedar forests, participants will see firsthand how forestry and wildlife habitat management can work together across a large and actively managed landscape.
The property also has a fascinating history. The tract contains remnants of the logging operations that once supported Slab City at the outlet of Shadow Lake, and part of the property served as the summer home of conservationist and acclaimed author Wallace Stegner from the late 1930s through the early 1970s.
The tour will take place along a portion of the property’s 22 miles of hiking trails and will cover approximately 3.5 miles, with shorter walk options available. Expect a day filled with forests, birds, stewardship stories, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn from one another.
Bathroom facilities are available onsite. This walk is free and CEUs are pending approval.
