Chainsaw Safety 101: Safe Operation & Essential Skills
Perfect for beginners or anyone looking to build confidence with a chainsaw. You'll learn:
- Choosing the right chainsaw for the job, including both battery and gas chainsaws
- Selecting personal protective equipment (PPE), why it matters, and how to wear it
- Safe chainsaw operation and basic maintenance
- Common reasons a chainsaw won't start and how to troubleshoot problems
- Hands-on chainsaw practice using small to large battery & gas-powered brands
- Individual coaching while cutting using a variety of cuts on downed trees
Sunday, October 18th, 9am-4pm
Chainsaw Skills 201: Felling, Saw Maintenance & Working in the Woods
Ready to build on your foundation? This intermediate workshop focuses on working safely and efficiently in the woods, including:
- Routine Chainsaw maintenance, beyond basics
- Sharpening and tuning your saw
- Advanced bucking and limbing with a variety of cuts & using tools to assist
- Reading tree lean, tension, and compression
- Basic understanding of tree identification and why it matters
- Tree felling techniques
- Expanded hands-on practice with individualized coaching and real-time feedback
What you’ll gain from these workshops:
✔ Learn from experienced women instructors
✔ Try different chainsaws and safety gear before investing in your own equipment
✔ Receive a basic starter kit of sharpening tools, bar oil and fuel & one person will win a pair of Chainsaw Chaps (sponsored by Shelter Tree, DGP, and Aspen Fuels & Arborwear)
✔ Gain practical, hands-on experience in a supportive, encouraging environment
✔ Leave with the confidence to safely operate, maintain, and care for your chainsaw
Who Should Attend?
These workshops are designed for women who own woodlands, manage rural properties, heat with firewood, volunteer on trail crews, or simply want to become more confident using a chainsaw.
No previous experience is required. Participants registering for Chainsaw Skills 201 should plan to attend Saturday's workshop or have equivalent chainsaw experience.
More Details:
- Workshops will be held at Pratt Refuge, Duxbury, VT. Directions will be emailed to registrants.
- Each workshop costs $200 each.
- Sign up for one or both sessions. Prior approval from instructors is required to register for Sunday only.
- Limited registration assistance is available, just ask.
