Land Ethic VT

Deepening Our Relationship with Vermont's Forests

A land ethic encourages people to view the land as a community to which they belong, using it with love and respect.

“In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-members, and also respect for the community as such.”
~ Aldo Leopold, "The Land Ethic" essay in A Sand County Almanac

Land Ethic Vermont (LEV) is a collaborative initiative inspired by Aldo Leopold's vision of a land ethic. It aims to explore and deepen the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. LEV works to develop, maintain, inspire, and promote a land ethic among Vermonters, with the goal of preserving the health of Vermont’s landscape for people, wildlife, and other species. Through various events and programs, LEV helps Vermonters explore their personal and community land ethic.
