At Vermont Woodlands Association, we believe every landowner—whether new or experienced—has the ability to be a thoughtful steward of their forest. No matter your goals, we’re here to provide guidance, resources and a welcoming community to support you along the way.

Getting Started: Simple Steps for New Landowners

Here are a few ways to begin your stewardship journey and start learning about your land:

  • Attend an Event – Explore your woods alongside experts and other landowners at workshops, field days and guided walks.
  • Connect with a Consulting Forester – Get professional guidance to better understand and manage your woodland.
  • Explore Our Resources – From online learning to curated resources based on stewardship topics, we have tools to help you make informed decisions.

Contact Your County Forester

County Foresters are employees of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation who are available to visit your property, help you understand your woods, answer your questions, and offer guidance to support your goals. This service is free of charge and available to all Vermont landowners.

With support from the US Forest Service and other, Vermont Natural Resource Council is leading an ambitious initiative to provide new landowners in high priority regions technical assistance.  If you have purchased your property in the last 5 years, and own more that 30 acres, sign up for a free consultation with Michael Snyder, past Commissioner, County Forester, and forestry expert.
