Gerry Hawkes

A Lifetime of Forest Stewardship

Gerry Hawkes, a retired Vermont forester and inventor, has dedicated over 50 years to the intensive management of his 60-acre property, 40 acres of which are forested.

Acquired at 19, Gerry’s land was once overstocked with a maple overstory and struggled with poor hardwood regeneration. Through selective thinning and careful management, he transformed the forest into a thriving ecosystem.

Joining the Tree Farm program in the 1970s, Gerry values the outreach and connections it offers, allowing him to inspire others through tours and shared practices.

Gerry’s Advice to New Tree Farmers:

  • Learn from others' successes and mistakes.

  • Networking and education are key to sustainable forest management.
