Where: Barstow Memorial School – Meet at the gazebo and forest trails
Who: Open to adults and children of all ages from all communities
Non-native plants can more than just a nuisance — they’re quietly transforming our forests, streams, backyards, and favorite recreation spots. But with the right knowledge, you can make a real difference.
Join the Chittenden Energy & Climate Committee in welcoming County Forester Mark Raishart of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation for an eye-opening and hands-on experience exploring the plant world around us. You’ll learn how to identify common introduced (non-native) plant species, understand the threats they pose to ecosystems and communities, and discover simple strategies you can use to manage them — whether you’re one person with a backyard or part of a larger community effort.
We’ll also celebrate the beauty and importance of native plants in Chittenden and the critical role they play in supporting wildlife and healthy ecosystems.
What to Expect:
- A short and engaging presentation on invasive plant species
- A guided field walk through local forest trails
- Practical tips for plant ID, impact awareness, and management
- A chance to connect with nature and your community
Lunch will be provided – come hungry for knowledge and a good meal!
What to Bring:
Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes suitable for trails and uneven terrain
Whether you're a curious nature lover, a home gardener, a landowner, a concerned citizen, or a budding ecologist, this program will leave you inspired, informed, and ready to take action. Let’s work together to protect the places we love — starting with the plants beneath our feet.
